Nel corso della diretta per Assange di oggi Francesco Berardi ci ha mandato questa lettera dedicata a Julian Assange e che molto volentieri riproduciamo, in italiano e inglese.
caro Julian, questa mattina ho partecipato a una manifestazione per la tua libertà. Nella piazza principale della città gli attivisti che protestano contro la tua detenzione hanno costruito una sorta di cella, simbolo del luogo in cui sei costretto a vivere. Tutt’intorno alla cella di legno hanno attaccato dei cartelloni pubblicitari con le frasi pronunciate da te. Frasi su democrazia, libertà, giustizia e pace. I valori che hai sostenuto per tutta la vita.
Ricordo i nostri incontri all’Ambasciata dell’Ecuador, cinque o sei anni fa. Ricordo che abbiamo parlato del tuo gatto, e dei tortellini che Claudia aveva comprato per te. E abbiamo parlato di democrazia e libertà di espressione. Io ti dissi che non mi sono mai fidato di quelle parole false. Tu hai risposto che la tua fiducia nella democrazia e nella libertà era intatta, nonostante la detenzione più immeritata di tutti i tempi.
Penso che tu sia una vittima delle tue stesse convinzioni democratiche. Il potere (gli stati nazionali, le grandi aziende, il complesso industriale-militare) è del tutto indifferente a quei valori, nonostante tutte le parole.
Per il bene della libertà di espressione l’Occidente è in guerra contro le nazioni autoritarie, ma questa non è che l’ultima falsità: detenere un giornalista che ha svolto il suo lavoro nel modo più onesto è prova dell’autoritarismo degli Stati nazionali britannico e americano che si vendicano contro la tua onestà.
Hai denunciato dei crimini e i criminali ti stanno punendo.
Hai praticato i principi della libertà di espressione e il potere ti sta punendo per non essere ossequioso.
Se guardo all’evoluzione del mondo negli ultimi anni ti devo confessare che ho perso ogni speranza. Non ho mai creduto come te nella libertà e nella democrazia. So che solo la forza organizzata dei lavoratori può proteggere la società dal fascismo.
Purtroppo i lavoratori hanno perso la forza della solidarietà e il fascismo prevale ovunque. Fascismo, guerra, razzismo prevalgono ovunque. La tua detenzione è una prova del cinismo intollerabile di coloro che si spacciano per custodi dei valori della democrazia.

dear Julian, this morning I’ve taken part in a demonstration for your freedom from the illegal detention you are subjected to. In the main square of the city the activists who are protesting your detention have build a sort of cell, a symbol of the place where you are forced to live. All around the wooden cell, they have attached billboards reading sentences pronounced by you. Sentences about democracy, and freedom, and justice and peace. The values that you have been upholding all your life long.
I remember our meetings in the Ecuadorian Embassy, five or six years ago. I remember we spoke about your cat, and the tortellini that Claudia gave me for you. And we spoke about democracy and freedom of expression. I told you that I have never trusted those fake words. You replied that your faith in democracy and freedom was intact, despite the most undeserved detention of all times.
I think that you are a victim of your own democratic beliefs. Power (national states, big companies, the industrial-military complex) is completely indifferent to those values, despite lip service.
For the sake of freedom of expression the West is at war against the authoritarian nations, but this is only the last falsehood: nothing is more authoritarian than detaining a journalist that has done his job in the most honest of ways.
You have denounced crimes and the criminals are punishing you.
You have practiced the principles of freedom of expression, and power is punishing you for not being obsequious.
If I look at the evolution of the world in the last years I must confess that I have lost any hope. I have never been a believer in freedom and in democracy, as you have been and still are. I know that only the organised force of workers can protect society from fascism.
Unluckily workers have lost the force of solidarity and fascism is prevailing everywhere. Fascism, war, racism are prevailing everywhere. Your detention is a proof of the unequivocal cynicism of those who pretend to be the guardians of the values of democracy.
