The leader of the UK Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, defended Lula’s freedom in a statement at the International Social Forum in London on 14 July. “Lula’s prison is totally unacceptable, and I think we should say that we are sending a message of solidarity to Lula and we call for his release, so that he can continue his work as a socialist, as a trade unionist and as a political activist in Brazil,” the British politician said.

In his message, Corbyn highlighted the links between the #LulaLivre movement and the defense of democracy in Brazil. He said: “In Brazil, of course, we must send a message of solidarity to those who try to defend democracy, to those who try to defend the victories obtained in Brazil, through successive movements, successive unions and mainly by the governments led by Lula and Dilma.
This is not the first time that Corbyn has expressed concern about the country’s policies. In the context of the 2018 elections, he declared his solidarity with movements fighting for democracy in resistance to the emergence of an authoritarian power project.
“Millions of Brazilians are very concerned because the rise of the extreme right threatens to undermine democratic rights. We stand in solidarity with those who defend freedom, peace and justice in Brazil.
