The plan in particular foresees the end of the violence and fighting between the government forces and rebels, the opening of inclusive political dialogue between all Syrian political components and humanitarian corridors.
Annan’s spokesperson stressed that Damascus’s decision marks “an important first step toward an end to the violence”, also creating the ideal atmosphere for political negotiations.
“The success of Annan’s plan would be the best Easter present”, Monsignor Mario Zenari, Apostolic Nuncio in Damascus, said to MISNA. “We hope the plan will go ahead, because like many diplomats and observers say, it is the sole path toward restoring peace in this country”.
After meeting in the past days with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, Annan arrived today in Beijing, another key Syrian ally, where he met with Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, reiterating the importance of China’s full involvement. “I cannot work alone, I need the help and support of nations such as yours to resolve the crisis in Syria”, stated Annan.
The Chinese Premier in turn guaranteed support of the plan and reminded that the recent declaration of the UN Security Council on the Syrian crisis reflected the general concern and consensus of the international community.
