Different residents from the communities of San Marcos walked with the World March for Peace and Nonviolence. The residents made their concerns known to the Base Team of the World March about acts committed by the transnational company Union Fenosa in the department of San Marcos in Guatemala. The residents are still annoyed with the administration of the multinational given the terrible pillaging in the form of excessive charges made, causing enormous suffering among the population.
This multinational company has been acting in this manner since 2002 throughout the whole mountainous plateau of Guatemala. They also have a monopoly on electricity distribution throughout the entire country through sub-companies Deocsa and Deorsa.
One of the reasons demanded for the closing down of this multinational is because of the excessive profiteering though invoice collection for non-existent services. They expressed their discontent assertively today at around 10:00am on the main road out of Tecun Uman, where the demonstrators delivered this message to the Base Team.
Likewise, they reported the murder of a former head of their group, Mr Víctor Gálvez Pérez, last October by paramilitaries. According to demonstrators, it is a murder “sanctioned” by those at the forefront of power and is an example of how they continuously behave.
