30 Master of Business Administration (MBA) students, under the tutelage of Dr. Janice D. Alejandrino, Baguio Central University’s Graduate School MBA faculty and former Dean of the College of Business Administration, left the four-cornered classrooms of the University on November 15, 2024, for a business educational tour at the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) in Olongapo City, Zambales.

Vicente A. Evidente Jr., SBMA’s Acting Deputy Administrator, warmly welcomes BCU MBA students and faculty aboard the ship of innovation, charting a dynamic course toward a future brimming with groundbreaking opportunities for the Subic Bay Freeport Zone!

Upon arriving, the group was promptly ushered into the conference room for a briefing that included presentations on the history of SBMA and insights into its operations. An open forum followed, during which the top brass of SBMA enthusiastically answered questions from the students and faculty. Afterward, a tour of the facilities was conducted, during which it was noted that operations were temporarily halted to accommodate the eager Baguio Central University participants enthusiastically about discovering the intricacies of such a business environment. Other business locators or enterprises that graciously welcomed the group included DBA, and Puregold Duty-Free, before the group also proceeded to Royal Duty-Free, both leading quality duty-free markets in the Subic Freeport Zone.

Despite encountering a flat tire along TPLEX on the way, the valuable lessons learned from this experience demonstrated that future collaborations between Baguio Central University and other business institutions to enhance student learning are indeed feasible.

Ma’am Vivian O. Abalos, Human Resource Management Department Manager, inspired BCU participants by sharing her insights into SBMA’s practices within this economic freeport zone.

The recent visit of MBA students from Baguio Central University to the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) provided a valuable opportunity to bridge classroom theory with real-world practice. The students gained firsthand insights into SBMA’s contributions to the national economy, explored diverse business operations like those at DBA and Puregold Duty-Free, and engaged with industry leaders, fostering professional networks. They also learned best practices in management, addressed the challenges businesses face in an economic zone, and explored potential collaborations between BCU and SBMA, all while being inspired to become future leaders equipped with both knowledge and practical skills.

As the proponent of this initiative, Dr. Janice Alejandrino shared the following insights:

“… The day began in the SBMA Boardroom, a lively and welcoming space, where representatives from Building 229 greeted the students with enthusiasm and provided insightful briefings about the Freeport Zone’s operations.

The visit exceeded all expectations, offering far more than an introductory experience. The SBMA team delivered a comprehensive and engaging presentation, showcasing the unique operational model of the Freeport Zone. Students were impressed to learn how this dynamic area operates independently, generating substantial revenue without reliance on the National Government. The staff’s dedication, skills, and loyalty—rooted in their early days of volunteerism—shone through, leaving a lasting impression on everyone.

Following the briefing, students toured an independent seaport company within the zone. The impressive infrastructure and efficient operations underscored the strategic importance of logistics in the Freeport Zone. The group then visited DBA Global Shares Inc., a company recognized for its exceptional team of CPAs, architects, engineers, and legal team, gaining insights into their innovative practices. Thanks to the sharing and practical insights of Mr. John Stewart, BA Business Manager, and Ma’am Kyle.

The journey concluded at the bustling Puregold Duty-Free Shop, where students explored the complexities of securing supplies from diverse international sources and navigating the benefits and challenges of such operations. The visit provided practical knowledge applicable to future careers, while also deepening their understanding of the Freeport Zone’s multifaceted ecosystem. This was facilitated by Elizar P. Valentor, Store Officer and Christopher T. Aquino, Section Supervisor. The entire experience was expertly guided by the enthusiastic representatives of the SBMA Labor Department like Jordan Romeo Valdez, and Pricel Macabadbad, who ensured a seamless and informative tour.

As the proponent of this initiative, I am proud to have achieved my goal of validating and enriching the lessons I share with my students. This experience not only enhanced their learning but also deepened my own understanding, allowing me to refine my instructional approach and offer a more comprehensive perspective on the subject matter. This journey has been invaluable in strengthening both my expertise and my students’ educational foundation.”

Illuminated against the night, the Inang Laya Monument stands as a beacon of hope—reminding us that every business venture is a step toward liberation from underdevelopment. Here’s to building a brighter future, one entrepreneurial leap at a time! Credit: Genevieve B. Kupang.

The Inang Laya Monument in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, inaugurated on June 12, 1994, during the Philippine independence centennial, commemorates the Filipino struggle for independence and honors sacrifices made against colonialism (Dela Cruz, 2020). A symbol of national pride and resilience, it reflects aspirations for freedom and self-determination. Beyond its historical tribute, the monument inspires reflection on heritage, unity, and progress, embodying the courage and perseverance of the Filipino spirit. It also enhances cultural tourism, highlighting Subic Bay’s historical significance (Santos, 2021).
