Brazil, as rotating president of the G20, today called for greater consensus and collaboration among the countries of the bloc to achieve more rights for women and greater inclusion of women in global agendas.

At a meeting of the Working Group on Women’s Empowerment (WGE), held this Tuesday in Brasilia, the Brazilian Minister of Women, Cida Gonçalves, called for more participation of women in high global spheres.

“It is not possible that women, being the majority of the world’s population, are not recognized, are not respected and are not included in the main global agendas. We know that development and the economy are the main agendas and that is where we want to be and where we will fight,” said Gonçalves.

The minister also addressed the issues that permeate gender-based political violence, citing this year’s Brazilian electoral scenario, in which many female candidates were threatened and suffered misogynistic attacks as attempts to discredit their candidacies.

“We are not in positions of power, we are not in public policy spaces, because hatred of women has been very strong in the world. And here I am talking not only about spaces of power such as the Presidency of the Republic, but also about leaderships in communities, such as indigenous territories,” she said.

Gonçalves recalled that combating violence against girls and women is one of the GTF’s priorities.
The Brazilian minister recalled that “to guarantee respect for all women is to guarantee human dignity”, and also valued the role of women in the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.
