The National League for Democracy’s hopes of a decisive victory look to be coming true and increases its hopes of sweeping the party into power, ending decades of military dominance, as Myanmar’s election commission continues to release results coming in from across the country.
The NLD won all 32 out of the first 32 seats announced for Myanmar’s lower house, and three out of four seats for the regional assemblies, resulting in celebrations among supporters outside party offices in Yangon.
Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was reported saying the NLD is on track to win more than 70% of seats in the election. A total of 498 seats are contested in the upper and lower houses of Myanmar’s parliament..
The newspaper Global New Light of Myanmar had a Monday headline reading “Dawn of a New Era” and said turnout was estimated at 70%, with 30 million eligible voters.
However, the election triumph claimed by Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy is clouded by uncertainty due to an unexpected delay in the official release of the figures. Some fear the government may try to tamper with the results as the country’s Union Election Commission said the counting process may take a week.
