The Women’s Month exhibition, “La Moderna Filipina 2024,” at Imahica Art! opened on March 2, 2024, a stunnng showcase of the exceptional talents of 12 Filipina contemporary artists.
Paintings, sculpture, mixed media, a wide range of mediums and art forms… the exhibition is a comprehensive exploration of the contemporary artistic practices of Filipinas in the Philippines.
Each artwork in “La Moderna Filipina 2024” is a testament to the Filipina artists’ resilience, creativity, and depth. From bold abstracts to intricately detailed images, these works reflect their ongoing journey toward gender equality and empowerment in art.
Collectively, the exhibit highlights the different perspectives of Filipina artists. Together, they show their talents and talk about how women can be strong and thrive in the art world, often dominated by men.
The diverse array of art on display is punctuated by quotes from some of the artists sharing their convictions, and their points of view to spark a meaningful conversation about how art plays a role in the lives of Filipina women.
“Textures of Femininity” Alexandra Monserrat/Dimensions: 31.5″ x 60″/Material: Epoxy on Wood/Year: 2024
Alexandra Monserrat: “In this patriarchal society, being a woman itself is a struggle. I truly believe that women should be heard, and unconsciously, I can do that through my art by helping other women to amplify their experiences.”
Naomi Banal: “I grew up visiting galleries and museums where most of the abstract works were made by men, so I thought it was about time that women like me make a name for themselves in this genre.”
“Aliasha Arador: “I make art inspired by women and advocate for representation through hyper-feminine subjects, including women figures, features, and elements.”
Renalli Trajano: “My passion for self-expression and creativity drives me to pursue art, regardless of gender stereotypes or limitations.”
“Positive Disposition”/Maria Denise Heredia/Dimension: 36″ x 48″/Material: Mixed Media/Year: 2023
Maria Denise Heredia: “My mom inspired me to paint… I started painting abstract works because I wanted to fill our walls with color and texture. I want to leave a legacy through my artworks.” Thank you.
During the exhibit opening, guests and artists came together in an engaging and meaningful interchange about their art, their lives, and times. Through their diverse perspectives and compelling works, the artists weave a vibrant tapestry in the Philippine art landscape.
