On the second working day of the Latin American and Caribbean Day of Peoples’ Integration, held in Foz de Iguazú, Brazil, the message to the world was powerful: to question the challenges of Latin American and Caribbean integration, the capitalist management of the environmental question, to denounce the flagrant inequality in the region and the need to put popular movements on the agenda.
Representatives of the Landless Rural Workers’ Movement, and the Frente Grande from Argentina, among others, took part in the event, as well as the eagerly awaited speech by the Vice-President of Colombia, Francia Márquez, who urged that “we cannot continue to allow the mediation of the countries of the North to prevent us from resolving our differences and difficulties”; “it is a contradiction in terms that our region is so hungry when it is a food pantry”.
Marquez also spoke of the need to “innovate in our leadership, to think in different political ways, but not to be afraid to participate and make decisions, this is a path to unity. Unity among peoples has always been there, the problem is not unity, the problem is governments, and for these governments to be transformed, men and women of the people must be elected”.
