China will continue to work with all parties to enhance coordination and galvanise more responsible and meaningful action in the UN Security Council for the early cessation of hostilities in Gaza, the implementation of the two-state solution, peace and stability in the Middle East, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Monday.
She made the remarks on the occasion of commenting on Resolution 2720, passed by the UN Security Council with 13 votes in favour and two abstentions last Friday, which requests urgent measures to extend humanitarian assistance to Gaza and create conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities.
Mao said China voted in favour of Resolution 2720, the second resolution passed by the Security Council since the beginning of the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
However, she noted that the resolution does not sufficiently meet international expectations and has loopholes that need to be filled.
She said that as the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict has killed and injured tens of thousands of civilians and the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, China has called for the effective implementation of the resolution, the expansion of humanitarian assistance and the establishment of a mechanism to ensure compliance as soon as possible.
Effectively implementing the ceasefire remains the top priority and the prerequisite for everything else, Mao said.
