On September 7, 2023 in the morning, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake and several strong aftershocks hit western Afghanistan in the provinces of Herat, Badghis and Farah. Some of the most affected areas are located just 40 kilometers from the city of Herat.
The extent of the damage is not yet known, but initial estimates indicate that several hundred people, including women and children, lost their lives or were injured.
“Allow me to express our deepest condolences to the families mourning the loss of their loved ones,” said Fran Equiza, UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan.
“Together with our partners, we will make every effort to quickly bring relief to those affected,” she continued.
UNICEF teams are on the ground to help conduct further assessments.
The injured are being treated in nearby health facilities, with emergency medicines provided by UNICEF and partners.
UNICEF is also providing emergency tents for overwhelmed clinics.
UNICEF has sent 10,000 hygiene kits, 5,000 family kits, 1,500 sets of winter clothes, as well as blankets, 1,000 tarpaulins and basic household items, which will complement the support provided by other agencies and partners of the United Nations.
“As always, UNICEF stands in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan in this difficult time,” concluded Equiza.
