At 7 a.m. this morning, the Teachers’ Association began a 24-hour national strike for education.
Carlos Díaz, president of the teachers’ union, said at the time that they are demonstrating “for concrete responses to the teachers’ petition” and are demanding changes to the full school day; payment of the retirement bonus (there are cases where teachers have not received the benefit since 2018); measures to mitigate violence in educational establishments; changes in the financing of public education (regularising unpaid salaries of teachers and outstanding social security contributions); and payment of the historical debt.
This mobilisation “could lead to an indefinite strike”, if the authorities “do not react”, as declared by the union president. The strike covered 85% of the Valparaíso region, while the national average was 80% of teachers.
It is the first strike against Gabriel Boric’s government.
