The Middle East region has been faced with unprecedented earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria and could be felt in other parts of the region.
Two shocking earthquakes hit the South of Turkey, affected Aleppo in Syria, and were followed by numerous aftershocks that are still persistent. Both quakes reached 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale and could be felt in Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Iraq, and many other parts of the Middle East.

The death toll between Syria and Turkey has reached 20,000 as people are battling snow and freezing temperatures. Nevertheless, “a universal spirit manifested itself” as reported by Claudie Baudoin of Pressenza as several organisations rushed to help both Turkey and Syria.
In order to get an insight into the situation there, we asked Miray, a 21-year-old Turkish student to describe her side of the story. Her response was elaborate as it included various aspects to the quakes and she sent the following:

First of all, I would like to say that we, as Turkish people, do not consider this earthquake a fate or a natural disaster. Japan is experiencing more than this, so why is the number of the dead and injured almost zero there? It is already known that a fault line passes through the Southeastern Anatolia region. Leading geologists in our country and in the world have been warning us about it for years. Professor Dr. Naci Görür warned us about it in 2003 when he told us that “Danger is coming”. He prepared a special project for the earthquake zone, but the State Planning Organisation and TÜBİTAK rejected it. Thousands of buildings have collapsed due to poor quality materials. Moreover, one of the saddest incidents is that in Yeşilyurt Bostanbaşı neighbourhood, The apartment sold for 2.500.000 TL 3 years ago with the note “in accordance with earthquake regulations” (compliant with earthquake regulations) was demolished in seconds. Which contractor built this place? Who gave approval? How did the building permit come out? Everyone is questioning this.
We are so saddened that people’s lives are disregarded for a few extra pennies just to make more money. Aid could not reach most of the debris sites on time. If someone wants to help by lorries, they have to take permission from AFAD or governorships. Otherwise, all the help would to be thrown to the streets. Moreover, private cars that try to help and lorries that don’t have permission to enter these zones are the most dangerous ones because they make affect traffic badly as they get stuck in the way. That way, the aid teams, ambulances, and AFAD wouldn’t be able to reach the zones on time.
Two of my friends are still under the rubble and we haven’t heard from them for 4 days. There is no light and everything is dark everywhere. The teams can only work efficiently during the day. Hatay has turned into a deserted city. Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, Adıyaman are disappearing in front of our eyes one by one. A state of emergency has been declared in the 10 provinces affected by the earthquake.
As always, in difficult times, Haluk Levent and Oğuzhan Uğur, who have always been by the side of the people, were among the first to provide the most help. Under AHBAP (non-governmental organisation), they have been collecting millions as money aid from many famous and anonymous people. They also reached the addresses of people trapped under the rubble via Twitter and rescued them. They have great contributions in many things such as food, clothing, accommodation, etc. This country is grateful to them, and we are grateful to them.
However, there were also sad events; our access to Twitter was blocked. Therefore, many addresses could not be reached and we experienced communication disruptions. Our engineers made an application called deprem.io . Thanks to this, aid has become easier to some extent.
My nation is very conscientious and helpful. Aid material was sent in tens of lorries from every city. We have been packing aid materials for 3 days and a half. We have been sleepless, exhausted, but we continued. Believe me, you would feel ashamed to eat food, drink water, or sleep in a warm bed. Education was suspended and universities have been closed indefinitely since the rooms in university students’ dormitories were arranged for earthquake victims. Hotels opened their doors. Many volunteers opened their own homes. Thousands of people applied to volunteer at AFAD. My two cousins are nurses and they went to the earthquake zone to help. Aircraft companies have reduced the price of their flights to the earthquake zone. The price of bus services to the earthquake zone has also dropped a lot. Cargo companies sent the aid we wanted to send free of charge. Companies such as Trendyol, Getir, Yemeksepeti started online donation campaigns. Moreover, countless friends from Romania, Greece, France, Spain, Indonesia, Pakistan, Indonesia and Pakistan donated to AHBAP.
There are babies pulled out from under the rubble hours later. It was a miracle. A woman gave birth in a disaster relief area. The baby is healthy now thankfully. A line was also opened for the children of earthquake victims waiting at the mosque.
There are a few other incidents that make me sad and ashamed though.
On the first day of the earthquake, some young people made a joke and made fun of a person who asked for help from under the rubble with his mobile phone. Maybe it was the last battery of the phone of the person under the rubble, who knows? Another incident is that they put their own old clothes and rubbish into the aid. For example; the things we sorted out from the bags of aid included: wedding dresses, evening dresses, lace underwear, summer slippers, high heels, swimsuits, shirts yellowed with dirt and sweat, half torn coats and jackets, used underwear… Seriously, sometimes I feel ashamed of humanity. Moreover; market looters… In the earthquake zone, there were looters who took the opportunity to break the windows of the supermarket and took unnecessary electronic goods, detergents, etc. to their own homes. The event that I am most upset about and cannot digest is the following; the names, surnames, ages and pictures of the children were shared in the news. Child theft was committed in Adana City Hospital. I don’t understand what kind of time we are living in. On the one hand, there are people who are struggling to give hope to one more person; and on the other hand, there is a bad group of people who take advantage of the earthquake as an opportunity to pursue their own interests. I don’t even want to call them MY people.
I would like to also add that the Turkish nation will never forget this. I don’t remember feeling so helpless and sad in my life. It is as if time is flowing very slowly for Turkey. The numbers seen in the news are not the number of dead people for us, they are all values. And we are losing more value every day.

Öncelikle şunu söylemek istiyorum ki tüm Türk halkı olarak bu depremin bir kader veya doğal afet olduğunu düşünmüyoruz. Bunun daha fazlasını Japonya yaşıyor, peki orda neden ölü ve yaralı sayısı nerdeyse sıfır düzeyinde oluyor? Güney Doğu Anadolu bölgesinden fay hattı geçtiği bilinmekte. Ülkemizin ve dünyanın önde gelen jeologları yıllarca uyarılarda bulundu. Prof. Dr. Naci Görür 2003 yılında ‘’Tehlike geliyor’’ diye bizleri uyardı. Kendisi deprem bölgesi için özel proje hazırladı ancak Devlet Planlama Teşkilatı ve TÜBİTAK bunu reddetti. Binlerce bina kalitesiz malzeme yüzünden yıkıldı. Ayrıca en üzücü olaylardan biri de şu ki Yeşilyurt Bostanbaşı Mahallesinde ‘’ Deprem yönetmeliğine uygun’’ notuyla 3 yıl önce 2.500.000 TL satılan apartman dairesi saniyeler içinde yerle bir oldu. Burayı hangi mütahit yaptı? Kim onay verdi? İmar izni nasıl çıktı? Herkes bunu sorguluyor. O kadar üzülüyoruz ki, 2 kuruş fazla para kazanacaklar diye milletin canını hiçe sayıyorlar. Çoğu enkaz alanına yardımlar zamanında ulaşamadı. Benim iki arkadaşım hala enkaz altında, 4 gündür haber alamıyoruz. Işıklar yok her yer karanlık, ekipler sadece gündüzleri verimli çalışabiliyor. Hatay ıssız bir şehre dönüştü. Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, Adıyaman hepsi teker taker gözümüzün önünde yok oluyor. Depremin gerçekleştiği 10 ilimizde olağanüstü hal ilan edildi.
Her zaman olduğu gibi yine zor zamanlarda illetin yanında olan Haluk Levent ve Oğuzhan Uğur, ilk andan itibaren en çok yardımı yapan insanlar oldu.AHBAP( sivil toplum örgütü) altında birçok ünlü-ünsüz kişiden para yardımı topladılar, 15 milyon TL. ve Twitter üzerinden enkaz altında kalan kişilerin adreslerine ulaşıp onları kurtardılar. Erzak, kıyafet, konaklama vb. birçok şeyde payları çoktur. Bu ülke onlara minnettar. Hakkımmız helal olsun. Ancak şöyle üzücü olaylar da yaşandı; Twitter’a erişimimiz engellendi. Bu yüzden birçok adrese ulaşılamadı, iletişim kopukluğu yaşadık. Mühendislerimiz deprem.io adında bir uygulama yaptılar. Bunun sayesinde yardımlar daha kolay hale geldi bir nebze.
Milletim çok vicdanlı ve yardımseverdir. Her şehirden onlarca tır içinde yardım malzemesi gönderildi. 3,5 gün yardım malzemesi koliledim, uykusuz kaldık, yorgun düştük ama devam ettik. İnsan utanıyor yemek yemeye, su içmeye, sıcak yatakta uyumaya inanın. Eğitime ara verildi ve üniversite öğrenci yurtlarında depremzedelerin konaklaması için odalar ayarlandı. Oteller kapılarını açtı. Birçok gönüllü kendi evlerini açtı. Binlerce insan AFAD’ta gönüllü olmak için başvuruda bulundu. İki kuzenim hemşire ve deprem bölgesine yardıma gittiler. Uçak firmaları deprem bölgesine olan seferlerinin fiyatını çok düşürdüler. Deprem bölgesine giden Otobüs seferlerinin fiyatı da çok düştü. Kargo firmaları göndermek istediğimiz yardımları ücretsiz gönderdi. Trendyol, Getir, Yemeksepeti gibi firmalar online bağış kampanyası başlattılar. Dahası; Romanya’dan, Yunanistan’dan, Fransa’dan, İspanya’dan, Endonezya’dan, Pakistan’dan sayısız arkadaşım AHBAP’a bağışta bulundu.
Saatler sonra enkaz altından çıkarılan bebekler var. Mucize resmen. Afet yardım alanında doğum yapan kadın oldu. Bebek şu an sağlıklı. Camide bekleyen depremzede çocuklar için çizgifim açıldı.
Üzüldüğüm ve utandığım birkaç olay var. Depremin ilk gününde birkaç genç, telefon ile enkaz altından yardım isteyen birine şaka yaptı ve onunla dalga geçti. Enkaz altındaki kişinin telefonun son sarjıydı belki de kim bilir? Bir başka olay, gelen yardımların içine kendi eskilerini ve çöplerini koyuyor olmaları. Örneğin; yardım diye gelen poşetler içinden ayıkladığımız şeyler: gelinlik, abiye elbise, dantelli iç çamaşırı, yazlık terlik, topuklu ayakkabı, mayo, kir ve terden sararmış gömlek, yarısı yırtık mont ve ceketler, kullanılmış iç çamaşırı… Cidden bazen insanlıktan utanıyorum. Dahası; market yağmacıları… Deprem böglesinde, fırsat bilip market camlarını kırarak ihtiyaç dışı elektronik eşya, deterjan vb şeyleri kendi evlerine götüren yağmacılar çıktı. En çok üzüldüğüm ve hazmedemediğim olay ise şu; çıkarılan çocuklar isim soy isim, yaş ve resim ile haberlerde paylaşıldı. Adana Şehir Hastanesi’nde çocuk hırsızlığı yapıldı. Nasıl bir zamanda yaşıyoruz inanın anlamıyorum. Bir yanda 1 kişiye daha umut olalım diye çırpınan halk var, diğer yanda fırsattan istifade kendi çıkarlarını gözeten kötü bir kesim. Onlara halkım demek bile istemiyorum. Şunu da ilave etmek istiyorum, Türk Milleti bunu asla unutmayacak. Ben hayatımda bu kadar çaresiz ve üzüntülü hissettiğimi hatırlamıyorum. Sanki zaman Türkiye için çok yavaş akıyor gibi. Haberlerde görülen sayılar bizler için ölü sayısı değil, onların hepsi birer değer. Ve biz her geçen gün değer kaybediyoruz.
