John Tory Mayor of Toronto, “Whereas today, we commemorate the tragedies that took place in Japan on August 6 and 9, 1945, when atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We pay tribute to those who died in the bombings, while also honouring the survivors and all those whose lives were forever changed.
This day is also a reminder to find nonviolent solutions to world issues, encouraging us to come together as a global community for the abolition and prohibition of nuclear weapons. Toronto City Council has unanimously called upon the Canadian government to support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which would help create a safer, nuclear weapons–free world.
Inspired by the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima, the City of Toronto established the Peace Garden, located at Nathan Phillips Square, as a lasting expression of our city’s commitment to peace.
The City is committed to working with others to make the world a safer and better place for everyone, while recognizing that work still needs to be done to achieve peace.
Now therefore, I, Mayor John Tory, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim August 6, 2022 as “Hiroshima & Nagasaki Day” in the City of Toronto. “
