As of October 1st 2009 Mayors for Peace counts 3,147 member cities and municipalities in 134 countries and regions. During September [43 new members](http://www.mayorsforpeace.org/english/topic/list/newmembers0910.pdf) joined the movement of local authorities demanding the elimination of all nuclear weapons by 2020.
In September the 43 new members were recruited in Australia (1), Belgium (3), Cameroon (2), Canada (1), Croatia (1), Denmark (2), France (2), Italy (1), Japan (16), Mexico (2), Netherlands (1), Palestine (1), Portugal (4), Senegal (1), Spain (3), UK (1) and USA (1).
Mayor Marcelo Ebrard from Mexico City is one of the new members welcomed during a special ceremony at City Hall last September 10th.
**Top 5 countries:**
Growth in Japan remains remarkable. Japan which counted only 2 members, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, at the start of 2008, now has highest membership worldwide with 404 members. It is followed by Belgium (337), Germany (315), Italy (312) and Spain (215).
Membership is now counting in 132 members in Africa; 775 in Asia; 1,776 in Europe; 147 in Latin-America and the Caribbean; 222 in North-America; and 95 in Oceania.
Mayors for Peace is gearing up for a new membership drive towards the NPT Review Conference in New York next May 2010.
