BOOK TIP
This week’s reading tip is the book “ANTIFA – The Anti-Fascist Handbook” by author Mark Bray, who is Chair Professor of Comparative Education at the University of Hong Kong’s Comparative Education Research Centre. He has researched and published materials on the study of comparative education in areas including policymaking, financing, and planning of education systems, and was also one of the organizers of Occupy Wall Street.
In his book, he presents intelligent and exciting research and offers us a unique look inside the movement, including a detailed study of the history of antifa from its origins to the present day – the first world history of anti-fascism in the post-war period. Drawing on interviews with anti-fascists from around the world, the book details the tactics of the Antifa movement and the philosophy behind it, offering insights into the growing, but still poorly understood, resistance against the far right.
Since fascism exists, so does antifascism – also known as “antifa”. Born out of resistance to Mussolini and Hitler in Europe during the 1920s and 1930s, the antifa movement suddenly made headlines amid opposition to the Trump administration, the rise of the alt-right and the resurgence of supremacist groups like the Ku Klux Klan.
