Increasingly high numbers of Americans support monthly payments to the people during the Corona crisis, but Congress is not listening.
As millions of Americans confront the economic reality of being out of work for months as a result of COVID-19 social distancing measures, bipartisan public support for the government to provide recurring, monthly payments to the people has grown. For the past several weeks, Congress has been working on the next stimulus plan and many in the House have signaled that they support and endorse monthly payments to the people. However, today Speaker Pelosi shared the Democratic House Bill, the HEROES Act and monthly payments were NOT included in this legislation.
In response, Income Movement and grassroots leaders are organizing the national Shake Up Congress Protest and Car Parade for this Saturday, 5/16 at 2pm PST / 5pm EST. Participating cities include New York City, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, and Portland, OR. The purpose of this Protest and Parade is to send the clear message to Congress that they must go back to the drawing board with the HEROES Act and add monthly payments to the people for the duration of the crisis prior to the House vote.
The Shake Up Congress Protest and Car Parade is an opportunity to bring an existing series of social protest Actions out of the digital space and into the real world. In order to ensure safe social distancing is practiced, the protest will take the form of a Car Parade. In addition, organizers in each city will build a Human Stories Memorial that consists of personal stories from people in the community regarding why monthly payments are so critical right now.
The Shake Up Congress Car Parade in NYC will be circling government buildings downtown. Our parade route will start and end at Chambers Street between Broadway and Centre Street, in front of Tweed Courthouse, right behind City Hall. In our cars, we will safely protest with physical distancing. You can also find out additional information at: https://www.bailoutthepeople.com/
