An attempt to mediate in Honduras by the Organisation of American States (OAS) is being resisted by the interim government of Honduras. The OAS sent a delegation of top officials to negotiate the return of the ousted president Manuel Zelaya.
The interim president Roberto Micheletti says Zelaya’s return is out of the question and that the presidential elections planned in November will go ahead, even if other countries refuse to recognise the outcome.
The OAS wants Tegucigalpa to install a government of national unity with Manuel Zelaya at its head until the November elections.
The delegation included OAS president José Miguel Insulza and the foreign ministers of seven member states. The United States has also increased the pressure on Honduras by limiting the issue of US visas in the country. President Zelaya was ousted from power by the army at the end of June.
