– We in Greenland have done everything we can to make the Americans understand that they are violating us as a people and our sovereignty through their constant pressure. But nothing has got through to the Trump administration; on the contrary, they are increasing the pressure with each passing day, and now the international community, at least those we consider friends and allies, must step in instead of making small hesitant statements of support, says Múte Bourup Egede (IA – above). Denmark’s Broadcasting (DR) has an article today about the upcoming – provocative – official US visit to Greenland. It mentions an article in the Greenlandic newspaper, Sermitsiaq, which is better read here than in DR’s version:
Múte: Now the international community must step in
– The very aggressive American pressure on Greenlandic society is now so serious that the level cannot get any higher. Standing together in Greenland has not helped, speaking out has not helped, and diplomatic attempts at dialogue have been in vain. Now the international community must react, appeals the chairman of Inuit Ataqatigiit, Múte Bourup Egede.
I suspect that Múte Bourup Egede – my respect – includes the Danish government in Copenhagen among the ‘allies who have failed’. Because, look at the government’s pouting and flat response to the Trump regime’s entirely predictable and provocative demands with possible military backing – and imagine how the Prime Minister would have shouted and screamed if Russia or China had said and done what Trump says and does.
The Trump regime’s policy is one long violation of international law and this case (like his ‘LasVeGaza’ and others) should, if only for the diplomatic/symbolic effect, have been taken up in the UN Security Council. The whole philosophy of the UN and international law is that small countries must be protected when the big ones behave aggressively.
The Trump regime will get everything he wants – by perversely overrunning out of the normal – if the world doesn’t stop him. And this is all about his preparation of an autarkic USA that, with control over the resources of others – Panama, Canada, Greenland, the North, the Arctic, Ukraine and Gaza – will fight or war with China in the future.
He and the US will lose, but the price of US/Trumpian megalomania, militarism and ruthlessness shall not be paid by others, also not Greenland.
In this case, as with the insane armament policy against non-enemies, the positions of the Danish government and parliament will soon prove to be very detrimental to the future of Denmark – and Greenland.
