The Science and Mathematics Month of September is a yearly tradition at Easter College, headed by the SciMa advisers Jessa Obispo, Algyn Kidit, Krisjane  Galingan, and Elvie Petlungay. It culminated in a grand event last September 26, 2024 at Eugene Pucay Sr. Gymnasium with the theme “Holistic Partner for a Stable, Blest and Tranquil Future of Science and Mathematics Education.” The activity aimed to foster curiosity, excitement, and environmental awareness among the 17 sections of senior high school students. They were divided into four teams to compete in a variety of academic and skill-based contests namely, Jurrasic Park, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, and Jungle Book. Several of these activities were held before the culminating event.

Science and Math Month aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 4: Quality Education, ensuring that all students have access to a quality education and the skills needed for the future. Goal 5: Gender Equality by providing equal opportunities for both boys and girls to engage in activities. Furthermore, activities that focus on environmental sustainability and resource conservation align with Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. By promoting sustainable practices and reducing waste, these activities contribute to a healthier planet.

This activity is also aligned with the Republic Act No. 9003 known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, which provides the necessary framework to achieve waste reduction through establishing waste management plans and the opportunity to recycle materials.

A Science and Math Quiz Bee and Trivia took place on August 30, 2024, to aid students in reviewing and reinforcing their understanding of important concepts. The activity was conducted separately for each senior high school section, with one representative from each category participating. Science Quiz Bee winners were Kai Z’nah Quebral, and Martha Lindsey Mango while Science Trivia were Joshua Peralta and Jelianne Pecdasen. Math Quiz Bee winners are Sean Lopez and Romen Maiyao while Math Trivia are Ferdinand Dablo and Dawn Farcanao, respectively.

In a fusion of science and art, students embarked on a Science Photo Journalism activity on September 12, 2024, aligning perfectly with the event’s theme. Equipped with their cameras, they explored their surroundings, capturing the beauty and complexity of the natural world while honing their scientific observation skills. Sweeping the win is Justin Miguel Caday. Winners from the preliminary activities will represent Easter College in the Association of Science and Mathematics Educators from Public and Private Schools (ASMEPPS) competition.

The recyclable materials from trash were utilized in the “5R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair, and Recover) Competition: Iresiklo natin ‘to” activity, where, students per teams creatively repurposed recycled materials into visually stunning display sculpture stands, showcasing their understanding of waste reduction and resource conservation. By participating, students not only learned to identify and sort recyclable materials but also discovered innovative ways to reuse them, empowering them to become active participants in environmental initiatives.
