Appeal to media representatives.

Since October [2023], the Turkish state has been deliberately targeting civilians in the north-eastern region of Syria, in clear violation of international law, in the silence of world public opinion.

More recently, during the Christmas period and until 13 January 2024, civilian targets continue to be hit, in particular those that provide basic services to the population, such as water and energy sources, food reserves and industries, medical clinics, industries, factories such as cement factories, printing houses and clothing factories.

The AANES (Autonomous Administration of North-East Syria) provided data relating to the last 3 days, in which 73 multiple attacks were launched against different targets: 5 petrol stations and 7 energy stations were bombed and more than 900 villages are now without electricity, 6 people were injured in Amûde and Dirbêsiyê, 5 checkpoints of the local security forces (Asayîş) were hit.

Turkey justifies these attacks by saying it has the right to self-defense enshrined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. This excuse is baseless since the north-eastern region of Syria has not attacked Turkey in any way. The attacks in Syria’s northeast region are not a form of self-defense. What Turkey wants to do is destroy the lives of the people of the region and their desire to build a confederal and democratic model of society in Syria by forcing them to evacuate. The attacks are also directed against the strong Women’s Movement, present for many years, and its achievements in the region.

It is unethical to abuse the right to self-defense guaranteed by the United Nations Charter to legitimize attacks against civilians, and it opens the door to other war crimes.

It is also the responsibility of a free and democratic media not to let this happen. This is why we appeal to you to write reports that are faithful to the information that comes directly from the northeastern region of Syria.

This is why we send you information material and offer to provide further information and interviews.
