After the 12th National Election of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has been reelected as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The election was held on the 7th of January, 2024. Her party Bangladesh Awami League has won 223 seats out of 330 total. The independent candidates have won 62 seats. The opposition will be led by the Jatiya Party although its gain is meager, with only 11 seats. Hasina is going to lead the cabinet for the fifth time, which is unprecedented in the country’s history. The biggest opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has boycotted the election as it demanded a caretaker government before holding the election. The party even called a general strike on Election Day considering it to be a sham election.
Bangladesh Election Commission has declared that 40 percent of citizens have cast their votes. However, some sources are saying that this figure is too exaggerated.
Recently Bangladesh has become a part of the global zero-sum matrix. The US and its allies European Union, Canada, and Japan have not sent any envoy or observer for this election. On the other hand, the Russian Federation, China, and India are wholeheartedly supporting the present Hasina regime. One of the Awami League supporters has opined that all successes of the government would be downplayed by the Western media. The economic growth and the progress in the development indices are the laudable contributions of the government.
The BNP and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami supporters are accusing Russia and India of fueling an autocratic regime.
