Before the “Families Belong Together” protests against Trump administration’s zero-tolerance immigration policy planned for Saturday June 30, on June 28 in Washington 2.500 women took part in a nonviolent direct action organized by Women’s March. 630 were arrested in front of the Senate, among them actress Susan Sarandon and congresswoman Pramila Jayapal.
“Not in our country. Not in our name. June 30 we’re putting ourselves in the street again” Jayapal tweeted after her arrest. “I am PROUD to have been arrested with dozens of others – people who believe the United States must not hold asylum-seeking children and parents in cages. We need to keep the pressure on to end these atrocities” she wrote in her Facebook page.
The women used foil blankets like those given to immigrant children in detention centers.
“We cannot and will not stay silent while this administration criminalizes immigrants, traumatizes children, and creates family internment camps” they wrote in their Facebook page.
