“I am a member of the Student Platform for Engineering Education and Development (SPEED),” writes Priyanka Byahatti. “We develop action plans to improve the engineering education in particular to make the world a better place to live in. I am currently working on an action plan called ‘Engineering Seeds of Peace’.”

SPEED conducts a Global Students Forum (GSF) every year which draws academics, representatives from government bodies, industry and non-profit organizations, and an increasing number of students from around the world to discuss issues pertinent to engineering education.

“One of my teammates participated in 9th GSF held in Cartegena, Colombia last year with around 75 other students from various parts of world. The next GSF is scheduled to be held in December 2014 in Dubai. More than 20 students from India will participate in the event as SPEED has been very active in India. Now, our action plan aims to bring engineering students from Pakistan on this platform. We may conduct an event before the start of GSF where only students from India and Pakistan will participate.”

SPEED strives to empower students to become a factor of change in Engineering Education by providing them with the skills, knowledge and resources necessary to become a global engineer and show them how they can think globally and act locally. It is a global, non-profit student organization that functions as an interdisciplinary network of engineering students, who aspire to provide opinion and create an impact on future development of engineering education and its effect on society and environment.

December 2014 in Dubai: the 10th GSF theme: Engineering Education without Borders.

Through this week long event, students will be a part of an international experience, submerged in the atmosphere of cross-cultural communication and creative thinking. Participants will take part in workshops aimed at providing them with tools to find innovative solutions with a global perspective and apply them in their local communities. They will get a chance to learn about already existing student projects, get involved and/or start their own regional and global initiatives with the aim of maximizing the student voice within the engineering education community.

SPEED was founded by student participants of the 1st Global Student Forum (GSF) in October 2006 during the 5th Global Colloquium on Engineering Education (GCEE), organised by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The following years, SPEED co-organised the GSF with ASEE in Istanbul, Turkey and Cape Town, South Africa, and in cooperation with IFEES the 4th GSF in Bhubaneswar, India, Hungria, Singapore, Lisboa, Argentina and Colombia. SPEED hopes to expand the Global Student Forum initiative significantly in the coming years through global cooperation and feedback from students and through other activities to further enrich engineering education curricula worldwide.

We invite you to be with us at the next GSF to be hosted at Dubai in United Arab Emirates in December, 2014.
