United Nations, Feb 24 (Prensa Latina) U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called today for holding an inclusive political dialogue in Ukraine after an uprising overthrew President elect Víktor Yanukóvich and de facto authorities assumed power.
“I call for an inclusive political process that reflects the aspirations of all Ukrainians and preserves Ukraine’s unity and territorial integrity,” the secretary noted in a communiqué.
Ban emphasized that he is closely following the events in the European country and keeping in touch with key actors on how to support a peaceful way forward for Ukraine at this time.
In order to bring about a stable and prosperous future for Ukraine, the Secretary-General is calling for a firm commitment by all concerned, to uphold the key principles of democracy and human rights and thereby create a conducive environment for free and fair elections.
Aiming at assuring Ukrainians of the support of the UN and the wider international community, the Secretary-General has sent his senior advisor, Mr. Robert Serry, to Ukraine.
According to the communiqué, Serry already met Turchinov, to whom he expressed Ban´s solidarity with Ukrainians and his commitment in aiding them to establish an inclusive government.
Calling for financial aid from the west and issuing an arrest warrant against President Yanukovich were among the first steps taken by de facto authorities.
