The president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, said today, September 25, 2012, in her intervention in the General Assembly of the UN, that the Brazilian government recognizes Palestine as a member State of the UN, and reiterated their support for the freedom of Palestinians.
Highlighting the intensification of conflicts in the Middle East, Dilma called for an urgent institutional reform of the UN, especially in the Security Council. “We can´t allow this council to be substituted, as it has happened, by coalitions outside of its control and from international law. The use of unauthorized force, a clear illegality, has gained acceptable space. But this is not an acceptable option,” she added.
Rousseff also pointed out the urgency of working towards a world free of weapons of mass destruction, as this “hinders the efforts for peace.” “The world asks for food instead of weapons, food for millions of people,” she stated.
