There had been concern amongst high ranking PA officials that violent clashes between protesters and the Israeli military could “heighten tensions and undermine security cooperation,” according to the Israeli newspaper.
Nonetheless, the demonstrations are planned to take place in the centre of Palestinian cities. Settlements and road-blocks, traditionally sources of tension for both sides, will not be targeted.
The news comes a week after YNet News, an Israeli news website, reported that Israeli military officials had announced the purchase of NIS 75 million worth of “non-lethal” weapons in preparation for September. The shipment included tear-gas, water canons and “the skunk,” a scent bomb which induces nausea and vomiting.
Today YNet News quoted a report, released by Israeli intelligence officials to the Knesset last week, which said the demonstrations in September were not expected to be violent.
