The Israeli parliament is set to vote on a bill that will impose sanctions on people or organizations that call for a boycott of Israel or its settlements.
The Israeli parliament’s legal advisor, Eyal Inon, was set to make a statement against the bill on Monday, saying the new law will damage freedom of expression.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said on Monday he would not delay the bill, contrary to earlier reports he would ask that the bill only be voted on after the upcoming announcement from the Middle East Quartet negotiating team.
The bill would apply to existing boycotts such as a construction company’s boycott on materials produced in the settlements.
Israeli Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein had earlier said he will support the bill’s legality in the High Court of Appeal if it is challenged after becoming law.
