On receiving the Principe de Asturias a la Concordia Award 2009 from the hands of Prince Felipe, the Mayor of Berlin recalled that November will mark twenty years since the events that led to the fall of the wall that separated the city, in the autumn of 1989, when millions of people poured onto the streets of the Democratic Republic to demonstrate “for the right to freedom.”
For Klaus Wowereit, the fall of the Wall was the “happiest moment in the history of Berlin.”
On November 9th, the city will celebrate the event with commemorative acts that will bring together many international guests at the Brandenburg Gate, and which will pay homage to the successes of the city in the last twenty years. Berlin will also be the setting for the meeting of the Nobel Peace Prize, which is to be held in the Palace of the Berlin Municipality.
