The United Nations General Assembly awarded President Evo Morales a medal and scroll, naming him “Global Defender of Mother Earth”.
The ceremony in which UN General Assembly, Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, awarded the honor took place at the Palacio Quemado, the presidential palace in La Paz.
Morales successfully lobbied last April 22 for the UN to declare that date “International Mother Earth Day”, thus ensuring that the international community show the same devotion and age-old respect of Andean Communities for the Pachamana (Mother Earth in Quechua).
The resolution was adopted by a voice vote in the United Nations General Assembly personally attended by the President, who is a member of Bolivia’s indigenous community.
