On July 18th – the date of Nelson Mandela´s 91st birthday – the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the 46664 campaign will promote the Mandela Day Celebration in New York City Music Hall. The event crowns a campaign called “Mandela Day – make an imprint” in which citizens are asked to donate a minute for each of the 67 years of service Nelson Mandela has given promoting dialogue, supporting projects in South África and in Sub-Saharan África to fight poverty and AIDS.
About 134 thousand minutes have already been pledged by volunteers who have already started performing a wide range of activities from community service and city renovation to professional workshops and artistic events. One of the objectives of Mandela Day is to institute an official worldwide activist day in years to come.
The concert will have free live Internet streaming for viewers around the globe provided by the Mandela Day TV – launched on July 8th through a partnership with the Livestream company. Stevie Wonder; Wyclef Jean; Aretha Franklin; Loyiso; Will.I.Am; Jesse McCartney and Cyndi Lauper are among the confirmed artists to perform.
The 46664 campaign bears Mandela´s Rhode Island prison number and was originally created to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. Currently it is broadening its focus to the organization of Mandela Day and to fundraise for the volunteer organizations withing the Nelson Mandela Foundation net.
