It took less than 24 hours to create the Haiti Solidarity Committee on Jan. 14th. The people of Pernambuco have donated almost 1 ton of supplies to the victims of the earthquake. Military police section of Derby, district of the city of Recife, is the place with the highest number of donations. There are hundreds of bottles of drinking water, staple food, clothing and toys.
PressenzaRecife, 22/01/10Lieutenant Igor Rodrigo da Silva, who was helping organize the donations is really surprised with such solidarity. "Every minute we are receiving food donations. And fast-paced. The campaign is a success," he said. At the donation center of Av. Boa Viagem, near 2º Jardim, there are almost 800 kg of food supplies.
At Parque da Jaqueira, people delivered dozens of boxes of food, bottles of mineral water and clothing in less than 40 minutes. Some people are adding toys to the list of donations.
At the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), Pernambuco branch, located at Rua do Imperador, district of Santo Antonio is another collection center. This place will be open on weekends and clothing is the most donated item.
Haiti Solidarity Committee
Created on Jan. 14 by private companies and public institutions, the committee launched the campaign "Help Haiti".
The committee aims to collect non-perishable food supplies, clothing, mineral water (5-litre bottles) to the victims of the earthquake. Collection centers have been installed in Recife. The main churches are also receiving donations, including those coming from other States.
